Photographic Memories

By Eve Matheson

Five of today’s top fashion photographers reveal the characteristics experience has taught them to look for in new models. Find out if you have what it takes.

Asian model Xiao Wang

IN DEVELOPMENT: Stunning new asian model Xiao Wang hopes to ignite her modeling career by working with photographers who can bring out their best.

Photographers deserve great respect for the crucial part they play in the success of both a model’s and an actor’s career. Many of them can be very influential with designers, magazine editors, and model agents, because of the models they have photographed and, in some cases, discovered. The photographers I interview here modestly protest that there is nothing magical about their inspiration and talent, but, as with anyone in the arts, they have innate gifts that sets them apart. To see a fashion tableau come to life under their direction is amazing.

A new model should always work with an experienced photographer, and the ingénue who has the opportunity to shoot with such impassioned professionals is fortunate. If both are new to the business, the results could be an expensive mistake, which happens from time to time. If the shoot is free, it can be a learning experience for both parties.

As a former model, I have worked with many fashion and commercial print photographers, and I always could tell from the very start of the shoot, based on the photographer’s disposition and personality, if it would be fun or a nightmare. A photographer’s demeanor is very important. He or she must instill confidence and bring out the very best in the model or actor, and vice versa. That is why certain photographers work with the same famous faces repeatedly; the chemistry and rapport has been there from the beginning. These two factors are a dynamite combination and contribute to financial success and fabulous pictures.
