Smoldering Shades of Awesome

Does winter throw your face into a frozen funk? Use these pro tips to warm up your look all season long.

Makeup by Ernie McCraw
The chill of winter inspires us to curl up next to the fire and snuggle into our favorite sweater. It is also time to warm up your look with makeup moves like sultry, smoky eyes and wine-colored lips.

Light, frosty shadows and shimmery glosses are perfect for bronzed summer skin, but as your tan fades and you trade a bright summer wardrobe for soft grays and muted fall shades, your makeup needs a bit of a boost. Here are a few tips on creating hot looks for winter.

Smoky eyes are great to draw attention your way. Don’t buy into the belief that this sexy look is only for evenings. This technique can be ideal for daytime business hours, too, when you keep it within reason. For day, opt for a moss-colored shade or a deep bronze. For a night on the town, use a deep blue or espresso shade to give yourself more intensity.

For proper application, start with a full sweep across the upper lid. Blending is key, so using a professional makeup brush will save time and effort. From the inside corner of the eye, pull the brush to the outside corner of the lid. The shadow should extend from the lash line to just above the crease of the eye. Several sheer layers will give you more control over the depth of color and create a flawless finish. After applying a base shadow to the lid, contour in the crease with a slightly darker shade and blend. The shadow shouldn’t go beyond the end of the eyebrow. To take this look into evening, run the shadow brush under the lower lashes as well...
